How do I check hail history for an address?

Paste the address into the Native Base hail history lookup. It searches the NOAA NCEI Storm Events database — the federal record of severe weather — for every hail, damaging-wind and tornado event recorded within 5 miles of that point over the last 10 years, and returns counts, the largest hail size, the strongest gust, and the most recent events with dates and distances.

Does this show if a specific roof was damaged by hail?

No. NOAA records storm events, not property damage. A 2-inch hail event half a mile away is strong evidence the roof took hail that day, but whether it was damaged (or has since been replaced) comes from an inspection or a loss run. Use this as the screening question: was there a recorded event worth asking about?

What size hail causes roof damage?

One inch (quarter size) is the National Weather Service severe threshold and can damage older asphalt shingles. At 1.5 inches (ping-pong ball) roof claims become common, and 2 inches or more (hen egg) reliably damages most roof coverings, vents and soffits. The lookup flags the largest recorded size within the radius so you can calibrate.

Why do insurers care about hail history at an address?

Hail is the largest source of property-insurance losses in much of the country, and prior events at a location raise both the chance of pre-existing damage and the expected loss cost. Underwriters price roof age and hail zone together — walking into a submission already knowing the address took 1.75-inch hail two springs ago changes the conversation about the roof.

Where does the storm data come from?

From the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Storm Events bulk dataset — the same official record behind the NCEI storm events search portal. Native Base loads the federal bulk files continuously and searches them within a 5-mile radius of the geocoded point. Magnitudes follow the NCEI conventions: hail in inches, wind converted from knots to mph.
